Introducing "The S.T.A.N. Plan"

Is cc0.photo Really A Free Image Site?

CCO Photos - Free Images Site Review
cc0.photo doesn't have as many images on it as some of the other Free Image sites. If I had to guess, I'd say there are less than 200 photos. Looking at the site gives you the illusion that there are more. But there isn't. And that's not a bad thing. Because it has a uniqueness to it that's difficult to put your finger on. Until you read the 'About' page..

Who's Behind This Site?

It's not a major corporation. It's not a celebrity, or even a well known photographer. It's a grandson showing his admiration and love for his grandfather. Here's an exerpt:
CC0.photo is a project initiated by Raffael Herrmann, which serves you with free (and I mean really free) photos. All pictures are taken by myself or my (sadly deceased) uncle Peter Janzen. You can find out whether a photo is taken by me or my uncle, by looking for the post author on the photo detail pages.
That's it. And once I read that, I wanted to view more photos. If not because of their quality, because of their QUALITY. By that, I mean the quality of the relationship it paints. I wanted to know how many of the pictures they took together. How many of these images rush at Raffael with memories that live because of them. Were they walking together when Hokenstraße at night was taken. Did they watch the Fireworks over Goslar together? And what's the significant history behind Historical Window Behind A Tree?  I wanted to know more about the people that were taking the photos.

What Kind Of Photos Can You Expect

It's a good mix. I can't say for sure, but it looks like Peter Janzen mixed it up with still life and animals. Lots of country roads, fields, cats, dogs and even a ram. Raffael  seems to like architecture, technology, and anything with water. All of them are better than average, and some of them are really outstanding. I still feel like the stories behind them are what makes the shots though.

Are They Really Free?

Yes. Absolutely. It says that in more than one place, but here is the license ;
All photos on cc0.photo are released under the CC0-license, which means that you are allowed to use the photos for free. You’re also allowed to share or modify the photos – for private, public and commercial purposes! All pictures are dedicated to the public domain. This means you even don’t have to set a backlink. No attribution required! (That is not to say, that I wouldn’t be happy if you set a backlink nevertheless…)

What's The Site Running On?

It's an Ubuntu OS running an Apache Web server. The site is running on Word Press, using Yoast and many other free plugins. The site would be doable by most developers.

Where Else You Can Find CC0

I didn't find a Twitter, Google Plus, or Pinterest account, but they very well may have one. What I found was a Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/cc0.photos . Raffael has continued to take pictures, as the I have seen one as recently as January 12, 2016. I hope he continues, and leaves the site, it's pictures, and it's memories with his grandson. Well done.

Hello Stan,

this is Raffael from cc0.photo. Now it took me almost 6 years to find your blog article. In the hope that you still maintain this blog, I would like to answer a few of your questions.
Over the past few years, the collection has continued to grow. Currently there are 1022 photos online at cc0.photo. And even if the last upload is already a few weeks ago, many more will follow. I still have several hundred pictures taken by my uncle Peter as well as my grandpa Heinz on the hard disk, which are waiting to be uploaded.
But since uploading always takes some time (setting keywords, uploading pictures, setting titles, researching locations, etc.) I only get to upload new pictures every now and then.

Regarding your question if cc0.photo is still present on other platforms, I can congratulate you - you have researched well. Apart from the Facebook page you found, there are no other profiles. However, since the feedback on Facebook is marginal (to non-existent), I must admit that I have somewhat neglected the Facebook page over the years.

Let me answer a few more of your questions...
"Were they walking together when Hokenstraße at night was taken." - not exactly at the evening this photo was taken, but Peter and I walked there quite often.
"Did they watch the Fireworks over Goslar together?" - Yes, we did twice :-)
"And what's the significant history behind Historical Window Behind A Tree?" - I wasn't onsite when this picture was taken and I'm not even sure where exactly it was taken, but I guess its probaly one of the niches of Goslar's oldtown, Peter's hometown. (And mine also for my first 21 years of life. Meanwhile I moved to the Ruhrarea.)

Although all three of us love(d) photography a lot, most of the pictures were taken alone by one of us each. We weren't often out photographing together. Nevertheless, we spent a lot of time together, talking and walking for hours or sitting in Grandpa's garden. Still, I associate a lot with the photos because almost all of the photos (that were taken by my uncle and grandpa) were taken in places we had already visited together on other days. A good example of such images is the following: https://cc0.photo/2021/12/03/garden-sculpture-from-blue-plastic-chair/ It was shot by my uncle. I wasn't there when he made the photo. But the picture shows a scenery of my Grandpa's garden which gives me really a lot of memories. Because we three spend endless hours in his garden.

I hope I could answer some of your questions. Thanks again for writing this blog, Stan!

Best wishes from Germany,
Raffael
